Big Thunder Mountain first
opened at Disneyland on September 2, 1979. It was originally the site of the
“Rainbow Caverns Mine Train”, which then became “Mine Train Through Nature’s
Wonderland” before it was finally replaced by Big Thunder Mountain Railroad as
it currently stands today.
There are six trains
that rotate being in operation, they are named: U.R. Courageous, I.M. Brave, I.M. Bold, U.R. Fearless, I.B. Hearty, and
U.R. Daring. Each train has an engine car and 5 passenger cars, each with two
benches. For the "wildest ride" request a seat in the back
rows. For tamer rides, request a seat in the front of the train.
There is a FASTpass available for this attraction and the ride does get busy during the summer and towards the afternoon, so it is wise to get a pass earlier in the day.
Although there is several hidden Mickey’s around the attraction, but the most distinct and fun one to find it made from three gears as you start to progress up the second chain lift hill, look to the left of the train at the bottom of the hill.
